Among the various sources of anxiety, is either the fear of a loss of control over one’s life, or the actual experience of that loss of control. Aversive feelings of anxiety are typically accompanied by anxious thinking that conjures up a host of possible bad and negative scenarios for one’s future. Inner peace remains forever elusive and thus the possibility of resting quietly in God is simply not possible. This seems to have been Martha’s struggle and, hence, her apparent envy of Mary’s freedom from anxiety—quietly and peacefully seated at the feet of Jesus. Faith, as the only true antidote to anxiety is not about believing that nothing bad or painful will ever befall us, but simply that our ultimate and eternal destiny in the heart of God is totally secure and guaranteed to those who open their hearts to fully receive this fulfillment of our heart’s deepest longing and desire. Saint Bruno, like Mary, found such faith and bequeathed this same faith to generations and generations of his Carthusian sons. To the degree that our lives are still dominated by anxiety and worry, let us pray for this same faith that is the one thing necessary and that, alone, will bring peace to our troubled hearts.
