God’s answer to Abram’s question: How am I to know that I shall possess this land, is anything but clear or precise. Instead, he falls into a deep trance and is enveloped by a deep and terrifying darkness that calls for a surrender in loving trust to the Lord who called and brought him from Ur of the Chaldeans. And Abram does abandon himself to the Lord with that same faith which the Lord credited to him as an act of righteousness. As we advance on our own spiritual journey and our questions become ever more profound and consequential, we too may find that clear and immediate answers are not forthcoming. Instead, we too may find ourselves enveloped in that terrifying darkness that actually (and paradoxically) signals a deeper union and communion with the One who is the ultimate answer to all our questions. Faith, like that of Abram, is our only guide through this darkness and into the heart of the One who is that Promised and Eternal Land in which all our questions will cease and the heart will find eternal Peace and Rest.
