Striving to do God’s will, involves not only those momentous decisions facing us at crucial life-changing junctures in our lives, but also includes the many and varied choices we make in the course of every day. And whereas discerning God’s will in those momentous decisions is often difficult, knowing God’s will in the daily choices made from moment to moment is far easier. For one, any choice that weakens love and doesn’t foster concord and unity, is unlikely to be in harmony with God’s will. And so, for example, choosing to share malicious gossip or speak ill of a neighbor is always contrary to God’s will. Similarly, any choice that reinforces my selfish attachments and panders to my self-centered desires is contrary to God’s will. And so, although choosing in accordance with God’s will, does involve self-denial and an apparent curtailment of our freedom, it is ultimately in the service of our true freedom, as we steadily break free from our compulsive need to secure our own good—even at the expense of others. For, as Jesus illustrated again and again, the only truly free choice is one inspired, informed and empowered by love.
