Notwithstanding the total gratuitousness of God’s grace and salvation, the peace that Christ offers does come at a price—namely, living in total harmony with God’s will. Or, as Jesus expressed it: Doing just as the Father has commanded me. In contrast, the peace that the world offers, depends on realities outside ourselves and, especially, on my will being done. And whereas my will may be done some of the time, most of the time it is in conflict with those around me, who are intent upon asserting their own wills—a perfect recipe not for peace, but conflict and discord. Now, when we consider that living in accord with God’s will actually serves our ultimate good—and the common good of all—why do we persist in our futile efforts at finding peace where none can be found? Trusting in our Lord’s promises, then, let us take up anew the weapons of holy obedience, by which we will be able to realign our hearts and lives with the divine will; and in doing so ill establish our hearts in true and unassailable peace—indeed in Eternal Peace.
