In situations requiring difficult decisions, we sometimes ask ourselves: What would Jesus do? In our daily conversations it might be equally helpful to ask: What would Jesus say? Or, expressed differently, would I be saying the same thing (I am saying now) if Jesus were literally/physically present? Well, the fact is that Jesus is always present and hears our conversations—as the Pharisees, overheard by Jesus, discovered! Reminding ourselves more frequently of Jesus’ presence in our lives and his hearing of our conversations might be one way of curbing gossip, disparagement of one another, deceit, and double-talk. Then we would be more capable of heeding Saint Paul’s exhortation that we speak only words that are helpful and build up, providing what is needed. May Saint Matthew who suffered words intended to discredit him and ostracize him, intercede for us so that we may always speak words of healing and of love.
