    I’m so sorry to hear of Brother Stephen’s passing. I was at Fr. Edward’s funeral last time I was at Holy Cross, and was told that Br. Stephen was at Carroll Manor. I truly wish I could attend his funeral and burial. He will be missed.

    Br. Steven was the Guest Master when I made my very first retreat at the abbey twenty-some years ago. I will always remember that most of us on retreat were first-timers and arrived with the “deer in the headlights look”. After supper the first night, Br. Steven gave us the Dos and Don’ts to observe while on retreat and then asked if there were any questions. No questions were asked and then he laughed and said “Are there any answers?” (That’s when I began to relax!) He ended by saying “We’re going to give you permission to do something while you’re here that no one has given you permission to do before and that’s “to do nothing”. I often heed Br. Steven’s “permission” to this day.

    Speed forth, O Soul! upon thy star-strewn path;
    Speed, blissful one! where thought is ever free,
    Where time and space no longer mist the view,
    Eternal peace and blessings be with thee!

    Thy service true, complete thy sacrifice,
    Thy home the heart of love transcendent find;
    Remembrance sweet, that kills all space and time,
    Like altar roses fill thy place behind!

    Thy bonds are broke, thy quest in bliss is found,
    And one with That which comes as Death and Life;
    Thou helpful one! unselfish e’er on earth,
    Ahead! still help with love this world of strife!

      Brother Stephen was blessed with great wit and wisdom. I am so grateful to have been on retreat during the years that he was guest master and will always remember him with great appreciation.
      May he rest in peace.
