Some Short Books For Busy People

February 17, 2012 by James

This will be the first list of suggested reading for Lent. If you’re a very busy person, you may only have time for a few sentences a day. That can be VERY nourishing and support a habit of daily reading.

From Thomas Merton: Opening the Bible, Liturgical Press, 1970; 84 pages

What Is Contemplation? Templegate Publishers, 1981, 77 pages

Praying the Psalms, Liturgical Press, 1956, 45 pages

Spiritual Direction and Meditation, Liturgical Press, 1960, 99 pages

      Short but challenging:

Hugo Rahner & Karl Rahner: Prayers For Meditation, Herder & Herder, 1962,71 pages

Karl Rahner: Watch and Pray With Me: The Seven Last Words, Seabury Press, 1966, 78 pages

Karl Rahner: Meditations On Freedom And The Spirit, Seabury Press, 1978, 115 pages

Augustine Ichiro Okumura: Awakening To Prayer, ICS Publications, 1994, 88 pages

Romano Guardini: The Rosary of Our Lady, P.J. Kenedy, 1955, 94 pages

Hans Urs von Balthasar: The Threefold Garland, Ignatius Press, 1982, 146 pages

     Less challenging but longer:

Kathleen Norris, Meditations On Mary, Viking Studio, 1999, 94 pages

      J. Philip Newell, The Book Of Creation, Paulist Press, 1999, 112 pages

      Arranged for daily use:

Drinking From The Hidden Fountain: Patristic Breviary, edited by Thomas Spidik, Cistercian Publications, 1994; a few paragraphs for each calendar day
