The March 9 issue of the Winchester Star has published an article by Val Van Meter on the Abbey’s Green Cemetery. Val visited the Abbey yesterday morning to discuss, with great wit and verve, our various projects for ecological sustainability. The Green cemetery, with it’s parking lot and wooden chapel under construction, is certainly an eye-catcher. Mrs Van Meter […]
Lent: Temptation and Transfiguration
From a homily by Abbot Robert Barnes: What can be a greater contrast between the two experiences of Jesus? I mean his temptation in the desert and his Transfiguration on Mount Tabor. Yet, it seems to me that they are but the two covers, the front and back, of the same book, the book of […]
MONASTERY FRUIT CAKES
Last year’s supply of our fruit cakes sold out this past Christmas; baking was resumed in January. However, a genuine traditional fruit cake–and Monastery Fruit Cakes are genuine and traditional–needs time to ferment before it’s the real thing. This year’s fruitcakes will be available for sale around Easter. Both here and under the tab for the […]

Andrew Gries, who would be my Novice Director, showed my guest around and. among other things, pointed out a hermitage for monthly retreat days. As we were making our goodbyes, me friend noted, “This Abbey is […]

Reading to Understand the Scriptures
An excellent form of Lenten Reading is to choose one of the books of Scripture. But we sometimes need a little help to undesrtand what we’re reading. Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini published a number of helpful, prayerful and very short books often based on retreat conferences this Jesuit Scripture Scholar had given. All the titles listed here are available […]
